Hackerspaces as inclusive laboratories to build and have fun with tech

Greetings from Vienna!

We are "Do It Blind", an informal group of blind people associated around Metalab, the biggest hackerspace in the Austrian capital.

Hackerspaces are places where people interested in tech, arts and social change gather to discuss and experiment on various projects connected to anything that was ever made by humans. For some they are workshops where tools like soldering irons and CNC laser cutters can be grabbed, others drop in to print their favorite movie character with a 3D printer, sew and crochet or talk to fellow programmers, amateur radio operators or people who self-host their whole infrastructure to avoid big tech. There are even those who brew their own soda drinks! There's place for everyone.

Our goal is to explore how blind people can find their place at Hackerspaces and whether innovative accessible technologies can be created there. At Agora, we would like to present a couple of projects we've made such as the Metabraille do-it-yourself Braille keyboard for smartphones, 3D-printed tactile screenshots of apps and tactile aids to practise writing your own name.

Hackerspaces exist in the Czech Republic too so through this exhibition we'd like to encourage you to find the one nearest to you and get in touch - where two people meet, millions of ideas are born - maybe you can light this spark in your area.
